Nearly 80% of California EV Owners Plan to Purchase Another EV

Probolsky Research and Veloz Highlight Strong EV Loyalty and Growing Interest Among Non-EV Owners in August 2024 Survey

Sacramento, CA — A new survey conducted by Probolsky Research, in partnership with Veloz, reveals that nearly 80% of current electric vehicle (EV) owners in California plan to purchase another EV for their next car. From late-July to early-August, 900 likely voters in California were surveyed with demographics on gender, age and nationality showing encouraging results across key consumer segments.

“These poll findings underscore the growing interest in electric vehicle transportation,” said Josh D. Boone, executive director of the non-partisan public-private nonprofit Veloz. “There is a compelling positive story to tell among current EV owners, and this data highlights the importance of addressing barriers to EV adoption for the next wave of owners who are sure to follow.”

Key Demographic Insights:

  • 96% of EV owners aged 40-49 and 85% of those aged 30-39 plan to continue driving electric.
  • 83% of male EV owners, 80% of African American respondents, and 86% of Asian Pacific Islanders would consider purchasing another EV.

Contrary to recent headlines, this research demonstrates a strong loyalty among current EV drivers and suggests high satisfaction with their experiences. As California leads the charge in transportation electrification, these trends are likely to expand nationwide as EV adoption increases.

“This suggests there is no going back — consumers who buy an EV are sold on them,” said Adam Probolsky, President of Probolsky Research. “The data shows that current EV owners, especially among certain demographics, have had a positive experience with electric transportation.”

Growing Interest Among Non-EV Owners

In addition to the loyalty among current EV owners, the survey found that nearly 40% of gas-powered car owners in California would consider an EV for their next purchase. This indicates a significant opportunity for growth in the EV market as awareness and interest continue to rise.

Additional Demographic Insights:

  • 47% of individuals aged 18-29 and 46% of those aged 30-39 are considering an EV for their next vehicle.
  • 52% of Asian Pacific Islanders and 40% of Hispanic/Latino respondents expressed interest in buying an EV.
